About Todd Doherty

Todd Doherty, Member of Parliament for Cariboo—Prince George, has been a steadfast advocate for mental health, suicide prevention, and the well-being of Canadians since his election in 2015.

In October 2022, he was appointed as the Conservative Party's Shadow Minister for Mental Health and Suicide Prevention, a role that reflects his deep commitment to addressing Canada’s mental health crisis.

One of his most notable achievements is his relentless advocacy for the implementation of Canada’s national three-digit suicide prevention hotline, 988. Thanks to his leadership, Canada launched the service in 2023, providing a simple, accessible resource for those in crisis.

Doherty's work on 988 has been widely recognized as a significant step forward in improving mental health support across the country.

His commitment to mental health also led to the successful passage of Bill C-211, which established a national framework to address post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) among first responders, veterans, and military personnel. This groundbreaking legislation ensured that those who dedicate their lives to protecting Canadians receive the mental health support they deserve.

Beyond these landmark achievements, Doherty has championed several other critical pieces of legislation, including:

  • Bill C-321 – An Act to strengthen the criminal code to protect health care workers, paramedics, fire fighters and first responders from violence in the workplace.

  •

  • Bill C-209 – Strengthening victim notification by requiring the Correctional Service of Canada to disclose details of statutory releases for high-profile offenders.

  •

  • Bill C-207 – Establishing a national day of recognition on March 3rd for the heroic work of Canadian Forces members and emergency response professionals.

  •

  • Bill C-208 – Standardizing the interpretation of all-numeric dates in legal contexts under the Canada Evidence Act.

  •

  • Bill C-347 – Advocating for the creation of a national service medal for Search and Rescue volunteers, leading to the government’s 2017 announcement of such a medal.

  •

Todd Doherty’s work continues to make a lasting impact on Canada’s mental health landscape, ensuring that those in crisis have access to immediate help and that mental health remains a national priority.

Prior to his political career, he and his wife, Kelly, were small business owners for over 20 years, and he worked as an aviation executive, collaborating with various levels of government to promote national trade, tourism, and aviation opportunities both at home and abroad.
